Batteries end up in the regular waste all the time. When they get crushed at a sorting plant they can catch fire, and these fires are one of the biggest safety problems in the waste industry.
Litech has built a sensor that spots hazardous items in the waste stream without cameras or X-ray, so they can be pulled out in time. It's already in commercial use in Norway.
Litech has since signed its first international pilot with SUEZ, one of the largest waste management companies in the world, and received NOK 14.5 million in research funding from the Research Council of Norway.
Why we invested
Plenty of people have tried to solve this problem. Litech's approach works, and the SUEZ pilot is the first step abroad.
